Audible Warning System Test: Tuesday, December 4

LRAD Portable Loudspeaker

UPDATE: LRAD LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM WILL BE TESTED AT 10AM TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4

LRAD Engineers have stated that the max decibEL level for residents closest to the test (within 100') will be 80, and within hearing safe levels.  The audio warning message will last less than 60 seconds.

Sleepy Hollow Fire Protection District and Ross Valley Fire Department will be conducting a test of an emergency alert system using a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) next Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 10am.  The test will be conducted at the Sleepy Hollow Community Center on Butterfield Road, and will be audible through most of Sleepy Hollow.  During the test, individuals within 3km of the test site may hear a loud alert tone followed by a voice message.  If you hear the emergency alert during either of these times, please remember THIS IS ONLY A TEST!

The Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) is an acoustic hailing device developed by LRAD Corporation to send audible messages and warning tones over longer distances or at higher volume than normal loudspeakers.  Triggered by emergency managers using satellite transmissions and battery power, these systems will be tested next week by many Marin public safety agencies as a redundant, supplemental warning system to deliver emergency information and evacuation notices.  The December 4 test is part of the evaluation of the system's effectiveness, and there is currently no contract to purchase or install the system.

The 2016 Wildfire Hazard and Wildland Urban Interface Area Assessment and Report adopted at the March 11, 2017 SHFPD Board Meeting recommended adoption of an audible warning system in Sleepy Hollow due to the lack of cellular coverage and importance of early warning during wildfires and other disasters.

Sleepy Hollow Fire Protection District may poll residents via email following the test to confirm that the system was audible in various Sleepy Hollow neighborhoods.
